这部书讲述了一个名叫圣地亚哥的老渔夫，连续八十四天一无所获。第八十五天一大早老人独自把小船划出老远，出乎意料地钓到了一条比他的船还长两英尺的他从未见过或听说过的巨大的马林鱼。他以顽强的毅力和过硬的技术与它周旋了两天两夜，最终抓住机会将它刺死。在返航途中，血腥味吸引了许多鲨鱼，老人与它们进行了殊死搏斗。极度的疲劳更加削弱了缺少武器的老人的战斗力，尽管老人杀死或重创了前面的几条鲨鱼，但夜里鲨鱼成了群，抢光了老人的鱼肉。最终精疲力尽的老人拖着森森白骨回到岸边。
